How our containers are built

2 mm steel, fully welded seams, built-in drainage and raised feet. Plus what to know about corten before it stands on your paving.

Steel and welding

  • Stock containers are mostly made of 2 mm steel. Ground edging is usually 3 mm, depending on the product.
  • Every seam is welded along its full length, not tack-welded, so the container is sealed.
  • Each container has built-in drainage holes; a drain fitting is added to suit the planting.
  • Most models stand on raised feet, which keep rust from forming underneath and protect the paving.
  • Made to measure, we build to any thickness and specification the project calls for. Made-to-measure work is manufactured in Israel.

A sample of our corten steel was tested by the Standards Institution of Israel (2024) and found to comply with S355J0WP (corten) under EN 10025-5. Test report (PDF)

How corten ages

Corten containers arrive with their first layer of rust and look orange. After a few years they turn dark brown.

The pace depends on the region, the climate, the planting and the surroundings.

Corten and your paving

First rust on the paving. In the first period the corten is still active, so rust marks may appear on the paving. In most cases a good wash with a pressure hose removes most of them.

In winter. When the container stands on raised feet and the paving has a proper slope and drainage, a little rust run-off may continue, but it washes away with the rain and does not build up under the container.

Delicate or stain-sensitive paving. Here we recommend corten less. We have alternatives in other finishes.

Reducing the run-off. A sealer made for corten, with a rust-stopping component, fixes the look and the shade and greatly reduces further rusting and run-off.

Inside the container. Soil, water and fertiliser create a damp, acidic environment that keeps the corten active. So check the drain connection, do a flood test before planting, and line the inside with a PVC liner or a suitable sealing compound.
